Whitening Toothpaste – Does It Really Work?

With all the buzz around whitening toothpastes, you must have wondered: ‘do they actually work?’. There are so many innovations it’s hard to follow… Charcoal, coconut, you name it. We know how hard it is to get your head around it, that’s why we’re here to help.

Charcoal whitening toothpastes

Charcoal whitening toothpastes are Instagram famous at the moment, but you might be surprised to know that dentists don’t recommend using them or any other charcoal-based oral health products. In fact, the Oral Health Foundation is worried that consumers are using these products without fully knowing what they contain and as a result are not getting enough of the ingredients which actively protect their teeth!

‘Toothpaste needs to contain 1,350 to 1,500 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride to actively protect teeth from tooth decay, but many of the current toothpastes which contain activated charcoal fall well below this level and are putting users at an increased risk of tooth decay.’ Oral Health Foundation

As it turns out, there isn’t enough clinical and laboratory data to prove that charcoal-based oral health products are either safe or effective. Simply put, it’s best to do your research well before you decide to start using a product with activated charcoal!

How about other whitening toothpastes?

Whitening toothpastes are indeed a great way to subtly remove stains and diminish yellowness. It’s important to remember though, that they’ll work for the surface stains only. Use whitening toothpaste on a daily basis and you will get rid of the stains on the outer layer of your teeth, caused by coffee, tea, red wine, and berries (for example).

According to the Oral Health Foundation, whitening toothpastes are also a great way to make the effect of professional teeth whitening last longer.

So… how the Ordo toothpaste compares?

The Ordo whitening & sensitive toothpaste has been specially formulated to help strengthen enamel and gently restore the natural whiteness of your teeth. Our toothpaste uses hydrated silica for teeth whitening, which is found naturally in quartz, flint, sand and amethyst. This hydrated silica is used to polish/whiten your teeth to a perfect finish!

It contains 1400ppm fluoride – the recommended ppm for adults as advised by dentist.  We know that fluoride can be controversial, but no need to panic! Dentists confirm that it’s an important element to keep your bones and teeth strong and healthy, it is also FDA Approved. Brushing your teeth thoroughly with fluoride toothpaste is one of the most effective ways of preventing tooth decay.

Psst… our toothpaste is also vegan friendly and cruelty free! So keep calm and brush with Ordo 😉
